Party Monster/Disco Bloodbath

BY JAMES ST JAMES

Before James St. James dazzled Wow Presents viewers on “Transformations,” he was partying it up in New York City with his fellow clubkids. Disco Bloodbath - now known as Party Monster - chronicles his friendship with club promoter Michael Alig, framed with Michael’s admission of murdering Andre "Angel" Melendez.

I’ve seen the 2003 film starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green, and can honestly say that it doesn’t do this story justice. They didn’t have the budget or time to really recreate the settings and anecdotes from this book, nor did they try to tell the same type of story from James’ point of view. You have to read this book to understand the spirit of the time.

Disco Bloodbath is both hilarious and shocking, and a major time capsule of the ‘90s club kid scene. I’m still working on acquiring an original copy of the book shown on the left. But in the meantime, I have the modern copy with the movie poster on the cover.
